Stantec Treatment demonstrates ROI and saves over £4.4M in one year using BIM 360 solutions

Since its founding in 1820, Stantec Treatment (part of Stantec) has engaged in the engineering, construction, and management of many large, technically advanced projects. These projects focus in the areas of water, hydropower, mining, and transportation for municipalities, governments, and multi-national, private corporations. Through its involvement in water engineering projects, its goal is to help manage water purity and availability in a sustainable fashion for the health, livelihood, and security of people around the globe. Operating in over 400 locations, the company’s highly experienced team of approximately 22,000 employees provides innovative, sustainable solutions for some of the world’s most challenging projects.
As an integrated design-build process contractor, Stantec Treatment primarily works with UK water frameworks, which are split regionally across the country. Working with customers, Stantec identified conversion projects as the focus of its transformation to digital delivery. The goal was to facilitate the transformation by upskilling, mentoring project teams, and implementing new processes through the adoption of the Autodesk® BIM 360® platform on select “conversion" projects, to enable the many aspects of its digital delivery toolbox.
Stantec Treatment faced a sector-wide efficiency challenge head-on. Through its Digital Delivery Toolbox, Stantec Treatment chose to adopt the BIM 360 platform to improve collaboration, communication, time and cost certainty, quality, and reduce health and safety risks. Since time on site is a significant project cost, minimizing this was a key measure to improve Stantec’s return on investment. In addition:
- Paper-based design reviews did not identify potential site issues, resulting in delays and additional expenses.
- Poorly coordinated designs impacted rework costs. According to the Construction Industry Institute, rework costs during construction can be as high as five percent of the contract value.
- Recording and reporting Technical Queries (TQ) from some sites were poor or non-existent. Improving TQ reporting from a site enables earlier rectification of designs, reducing rework costs.
- The frequency of Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) from some sites was poor. NCR reporting can be analyzed for continual improvement to drive cost reductions, and this opportunity is reduced when reporting is low.
- Enabling quality auditors and ensuring the Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) process was followed consistently to reduce rework costs. The customer lacked an audit trail around this process.

Autodesk positioned a Deployment Specialist for Autodesk® BIM 360® Glue, Field, and Plan. This focused on training and implementation of the conversion projects from July to December 2016. Autodesk continued to provide ad hoc support until a new consulting program of work—with additional water frameworks—was established for the second half of 2017. Autodesk also established a monthly, online BIM 360 Community of Practice to assist Stantec Treatment’s BIM 360 champions with questions, feedback, and any support-related issues.
Since adopting BIM 360 tools, Stantec Treatment has seen weekly time savings and a reduction in rework costs. For example, interviews completed with BIM 360 Field users in December 2016 documented an average hourly savings of 7.3 percent a week when compared to previous methods of performing site inspections. This is mainly due to the reduction in time spent re-transcribing and searching for information using paper-based methods. Extrapolated from one full project life cycle, this represented a total potential of approximately 3.3 non-productive hours of employee time per week—translating to a potential productivity cost savings of £111,700. Stantec Treatment implemented these new processes on an average of 57 projects per month in 2017, realizing savings of £1.02M across its portfolio.
Additionally, interviews with BIM 360 Glue users from December 2016 to January 2017 showed an average savings of £6,000 per month—a reduction of 11.1 percent—on rework costs, which could be directly attributed to proactive design reviews (by the client and construction team) using BIM 360 Glue. If this average was applied to a 24-month project, Stantec Treatment could achieve a total savings of £144,000. This translates to a total potential savings of £3.38M across an average of 47 projects per month in 2017. These savings do not consider the possible savings from cost avoidance and reduced site delays, which can cost more than £100k each week in penalties.
BIM 360 also provided the customer with a platform for digital rehearsals, site planning, and coordination. This helped extend data to the field and connect the site back to the design office—resulting in shorter site programs, fewer delays, and a decrease in Requests for Information (RFI).

We captured the digital collaboration rehearsals and 4D sequences, and the three 20-hour outages were completed with military precision and safety. She has asked that we utilize the digital delivery toolbox we have developed over the last six months for all of their future projects. We will honor our commitment.”
